June 2009
Dear ASTNA Member, There are two important pieces of information that the board would like to share with you. The first is a Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) Consensus Statement that Denise Treadwell, representing ASTNA, has been working on since last year. This came out of a summit organized by the Emergency Nurses Association to address procedural/conscious sedation issues their members were facing in their individual states. We felt that a Consensus Statement that included emergency and transport settings was critical. We are very pleased to have the endorsements of the Air Medical Physician Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, CalAAMS, and the International Association of Flight Paramedics. Click here to view the entire statement. The ASTNA board recently sent a letter to the Patient First Air Ambulance Alliance to support their efforts to seek governmental assurance of state primacy in the regulation of medical care aboard helicopter air ambulances and to develop a classification framework for critical care transport services. PFAAA represents 70 not-for-profit and for-profit air medical providers ranging from single aircraft to large national organizations. PFAAA members operate bases in 37 states and work nationwide. As I have said before, safety and care quality are the foremost concerns of ASTNA, no matter which form of transport is involved. We have offered any assistance we can provide to PFAAA to help them continue to meet their mission.
Stay Safe. Kevin High, RN, CEN, CFRN ASTNA President
