Certification Exams for Transport Nurses
The importance of specialty certification to the air and ground transport medical industry is demonstrated by virtue of the fact that many transport programs require their nurses to obtain certification in emergency or critical care nursing. Transport nurses need a mechanism by which they can be properly credentialed to validate a knowledge base essential for transport nursing practice. It is a standard by which employers and regulatory bodies may view practitioners, and will verify to consumers, a specified level of knowledge.
Since July of 1991, ASTNA has been involved in a joint certification venture with the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN). Based upon the results of a practice comparability study and a transport nurse role delineation study, an Agreement was reached whereby BCEN administers a certification program for transport nurses and manages that certification process. Nurses who successfully complete a certification examination earn the credential of either Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) or Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN).
The Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA) endorses attaining the CFRN or CTRN credential for all transport nurses.
